Baby Steps

Becoming a mom has forever changed my outlook on life in the best way. It has by far been the most rewarding and challenging experience simultaneously. It is truly amazing to me how this brand-new life can put so many things into perspective.

Recently I listened to a podcast with Jenna Kutcher and Ed Mylett, and Ed made a statement how he admires children because they were most recently with God and they have no limit to creativity and imagination, because they have no outside perspectives or struggles holding them back. That struck me straight to my soul. Here is this little human right in front of me who is growing, what seems to be in light speed, and he has no doubts and worries yet about the world he lives in. He is just fearless and wants to try everything.

He started walking on July 1st, and that in itself has been such a great teaching moment for me. In the months leading up to his first steps, he would get up and fall down and then get up again and then fall down. He would use things to balance, he would hold our hands, he would fail, but he did it all with a smile on his face. He seemed to enjoy every second of the journey leading up to those first steps. He never gave up.

It got me thinking of the importance of baby steps in our own adult lives. How we live in this culture where you see somebody who has built this empire of sorts or became wildly successful and they make it seem like they just got there overnight. But the truth is, they got there by doing a million baby steps.

I feel like sometimes we are told that if we just do steps X-Y-Z we will get there super fast and we don't have to do all the baby steps in the middle. What about steps A through W? Those steps, those tiny little steps in the middle are so important to our growth. Those are the steps that strengthen us the most and those are the steps that teach us everything we need to know to get to the next step.

When babies are learning to walk and they fall down they don't just give up and say “I'm never going to walk, I quite.” They are always trying again and again no matter how many times they fall down.

Yes, they can and probably will get frustrated and cry and that is okay. I think we should acknowledge that part as well. So often we take steps towards a goal or dream in our own lives and we get mad that it doesn't work instantly. When it doesn’t get us to from A to Z quickly then we just give up.

Building a business and building a life that aligns with your soul takes baby steps. It takes a whole bunch of messy action that strengthens our legs underneath us. I have experienced this so much the last few years, but when I look back at all the little baby steps we have taken to get where we are today it truly amazes me how one thing adds up and continuously moves you forward to become what you were dreaming of.

Thousands of tiny steps that we take without even noticing can get us in the direction where we want to go. Yes, those steps are scary. Yes they are new and can be messy but they are absolutely necessary to grow and to learn and to become who we are truly called to be.

Babies are so new to the world that they don't yet have an inner critic or an inner villain to tell them that they aren't good enough or that they are going to fail. Naturally, they just keep trying and they just keep putting one foot in front of the other. That's all they know to do.

I feel like often we can say to ourselves, “Gosh Sara, stop being such a baby” but in reality we should be more like babies. We should be able to just go move towards our dreams and build our lives that we want without thinking that we're not doing it right or that we're not good enough or that it's gonna hurt or we're gonna fail.

We should have that confidence that even when we fall down on some of those baby steps, we can get right back up and keep moving forward. When we do fall, which we will, we are allowed to cry and be frustrated. We need to give ourselves grace because we know that we are trying our absolute best and taking those baby steps towards a business and life that are fully ALIGNED.

LET’S GET WALKING!
